Since then, the brand continued to reinforce its values of sustainable materials and epic performance, and introduced new categories such as bras, tank tops, sweatpants, sweatshirts and down jackets. And to get the word out, they came up with a brilliant marketing move: offer a pair to anyone via a Facebook campaign, that not only turned viral, but generated more than 10 000 orders in the first two days. Their idea led to launching a first range of products: leggings made from other than recycled plastic bottles, colored with natural pigments and ethically manufactured. It all started when Ellie, an avid of working out, searched in vain for sustainable activewear and Quang Dinh (who had already founded an eco-friendly denim brand Sling and Stones in 2005) found a way to make polyester entirely from recycled bottles. The leggings also sport thick seams along the crotch and sides, areas that often suffer embarrassing rips when squatting.More than a brand, it's a community that husband-and-wife duo Ellie and Quang Dinh sought to create when they founded Girlfriend Collective in 2016. They are made with a “recycled high-stretch fabrication” that features a “4-way stretch” suited for an active lifestyle. On first wear, Girlfriend Collective’s Compressive High-Rise Leggings feel as if they could withstand an active fitness routine. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than leggings that sag around the waist or roll down when you’re on a particularly fast sprint. Performance of Girlfriend Collective leggings The Compressive High-Rise Leggings come in nine hues and I opted for the plum shade. I appreciate that Girlfriend Collective doesn’t fear color. With its colorful branding and fresh-faced models, the American brand is aimed at millennial women in their 20s and 30s, which could feel alienating for some demographics. Girlfriend Collective knows their audience. They are a snug fit, giving a supported suction feeling across the stomach and thighs.Ī post shared by Girlfriend Collective (opens in new tab)Ī photo posted by on Style of Girlfriend Collective leggings True to its name, the compressive high-rise leggings are, well, compressive. Yet, while the material is tough to pull on, they don’t feel tough to wear-the fabric is soft and breathable. It reminded me of trying to get into a wetsuit, as in there’s a lot of tugging. ![]() It’s a thick material that I did have a little difficulty getting into. The long length of these leggings is a huge plus for me but not necessarily suited for a woman of average height. Now, for clarity, I’m 5 foot 10 inches, and these leggings fit me to the ankle. The leggings are true to size and don’t feel like vanity sizing but more like "reality sizing" and I didn’t have to worry about sizing up or down. Thankfully, Girlfriend Collective’s sizes go up to a 6XL.Īs a UK size 10 (about a US 6), I decided on the small bottoms. Mainstream fashion isn’t often size-inclusive, which is a common criticism for many sustainable fashion brands across the board. Interestingly, Girlfriend Collective doesn’t use American manufacturers and instead uses a "certified factory" in Hanoi, Vietnam. They also use ethical dip dyes to give the leggings their bold colors. ![]() ![]() The Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise Leggings in particular utilize “up to 25 plastic water bottles” per item. So far they’ve recycled 4,482,875 bottles and saved 3,811,434 CO2 emissions-now those are some figures to be proud of. The brand really takes the saying “one man (or woman’s) trash is another man’s treasure” to heart and makes activewear out of recycled materials including fishing nets and water bottles. While the brand still uses plastic, Girlfriend Collective repurposes materials that would otherwise clog landfills and pollute the earth. The majority of mainstream sportswear is made from plastic-derived fabrics such as polyester, nylon, and Lycra. Sustainability of Girlfriend Collective leggings
